Thanks for the attention. I did both ways and I still get error messages like;

Enemy Territory:
/dev/dsp: Input/output error
Could not mmap /dev/dsp

and

Quake 3:
/dev/dsp: Broken pipe
Could not toggle.

cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp  also does nothing

Maybe some clues, I don't know:

While I'm at it, how does the -D option of alsamixer works? When I put
