Depends on which FAQ and which driver. For the fglrx driver I
think/I'm sure it has to be disabled.

As for ati-drivers it seems you are getting one older then I'm using:

flash ~ #  emerge -pv ati-drivers

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild   R   ] media-video/ati-drivers-8.14.13-r2  +opengl 0 kB

Total size of downloads: 0 kB
flash ~ #

Do an emerge sync I think.
