Since this is Gentoo:

ffmpeg -f x11grab -s xga -r 25 -i :0.0 -sameq -aspect 4:3 /tmp/out.mp4

You can change the aspect to suit your taste.  I haven't played with audio 
yet, but it shouldn't be too difficult to concoct something from the man page.
