They are slotted, so you can install both.

emerge avidemux:2 avidemux:2.6

However, there is a problem installing 2.6.2 over 2.6.1 because some
files have moved to avidemux-core causing collisions. I worked round this
yesterday with

FEATURES="-protect-owned" emerge avidemux:2.6

but it may have been fixed by now.

To try out 2.6.2 I have removed 2.5.6 first, then I installed 2.6.2.
Now I cannot install 2.5.6 anymore:

emerge -vp media-video/avidemux:2
