Sure. If the upstream package needs major changes, then the report probably won't go anywhere, but it's still nice to have a record of the problem. Maybe start a [TRACKER] bug for them?
We have the same problem with every new compiler feature, like PIC/PIE, stack-smashing protection, format-security, and so on. They all get fixed eventually if the upstream package is maintained.
