Unfortunately, the distinction, and so the subtleties of meaning, is falling into disuse, even in professionally written copy.
Oh my. I don't think I've ever run into this before. But, it's only been the last decade or so that I cared enough to pay attention.

Couldn't you have said "…habit that I…" in the fact that you were referencing a specific habit, not just a generic place holder?
