Before I do this, would it be useful to do emerge --config espeak in the chroot environment? On a previous kernel install failure, I ended up emerging espeakup and it was only then I found the accessibility support submenu in make menuconfig had got populated with speakup-related stuff but I couldn't get to speakup.synth in that submenu. speakup.synth was found by a search, I just couldn't land on it to adjust it.
