That explanation would account for what I’m seeing. A quick tour of the tv’s setup menu and a glance at the documentation didn’t offer an obvious remedy, but your suggestions and knowing now to Google for “overscan” will help immensely. You have no idea (or maybe you do) how frustrating it was to set up Gentoo on that box using that tv for a monitor. Often couldn’t see critical parts of what I was typing, nor the shell’s response. And I’m not a good typist... Thanks again! John
