I was mistaken about that latter; it's more complicated than I thought. The problem seems to have been that I was running the new installation by hosting a chroot on an already running Gentoo system. I still have no idea what's wrong with doing that, but I get all sorts of dramatic failures in emerging. I've now run a successful installation from a SysRescCD, so I'm left with yet more head-scratching. Sorry about the noise. -- Regards, Peter.
