Just read the doc about remote kernel upgrade. There's such on gentoo-wiki.com. Essential is to configure Grub to fallback to your old kernel in case of failure. Bad that latest kernels (IIRC >=2.6.13/14) don't have devfs anymore (or is hidden). HTH.Rumen
