I didn't have it installed.  Now I do:

*  media-libs/alsa-oss
      Latest version available: 1.0.10-r1
      Latest version installed: 1.0.10-r1
      Size of downloaded files: 218 kB

      Description: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture OSS compatibility
layer.

I restarted alsasound and attempted to start rosegarden and the MIDI
sequencer still failed....
