        Sigh, read the manual (you should be telling me :-(). 
        The symbols thing was about having a
        
          /lib/modules/2.6.14-gentoo-r5/alsa-driver

        Removing that fixed the symbols problem. 

        I'm still stuck on the 'function snd_ctl_open failed for
        default: No such file or directory' problem after reboot
        ('killall udevd; udevstart' fixes it).
