Your ISP should advise what is the optimum MTU for their gateway implementation. Mine for example is 1480. At 1500 I get a lot of fragmentation but can still connect. I have found that upgrading the firmware on embedded routers using the provided browser gui can go wrong with some browsers. If I remember right the Netgear routers won't upgrade using Konqueror, or earlier versions of Firefox, but don't mind Opera. Note: you may need to allow all popups in your browser for the upgrade to complete successfully.
