Of course.  First emerge eix.  Then run 'eix -e gcc'.  You will see:

  ... *4.0.2-r3 *4.1.0_beta20060203

>From 'man eix' you will learn what the * means: that it is keyworded 
as -*.  And 'man portage' will tell you what this means: "this 
indicates that the package is known to be broken..."
