I had emerged -C my mc after being scared of commands firing up ln, encountering mc and screwing up the symlinking and I was living with just /bin/ln
Just before reading your mail, I was doing a find /usr -name dig [looking for a command to do a DNS lookup] and find came up with an error "/usr/bin/mc : not found" - so I assume there are solid problems with the filesystem. I simply shall do a reiserfs rebuild for all partitions before doing anything else now. Once that error goes away, I shall emerge my mc and then I am hoping that it shall be solved.
