Yeah, especially since the /same/ type of blackbox (no auth, just
cable<->ethernet translation) for cable service is called a "cable modem",
at least in my circles. *boggle*

Ah, okay, I didn't read/remember the whole problem. Yes, you'll need to
set you Gentoo box up as a router.

Probably not.

Check your IP to see if it's publicly routable. If it's a private IP, your
are probably already behind a NATing router, and its unlikely you'll be
able to initiate connections TO your box. Although, it might be the
blackbox doing the NATing -- if so, we can port scan it and see if your
can ssh/telnet/rlogin/etc. in to change some settings...

Anyway. After that you'll need to install ssh, determine if your IP is
static or dynamic, if dymanic install a ddns updater deamon, and join a
ddns service. Then, test incoming connections to your Gentoo system.

For the whole laptop->Gentoo->blackbox->internet routing stuff, I may of
may not be able to help. I've never set up a wireless card as an AP -- my
WiFi experience is limited to OpenWRT on my Linksys WRT54G.

If you can get your laptop and Gentoo box talking, even if it's just with a
fragile, static setup. I can certainly help with setting up DHCPd and
routing (probably with NAT) on the Gentoo box and opening a tunnel so you
can ssh directly into the laptop, when it is connect.

SSH Access and Routing are mostly orthoganal -- so we can work on both at
the same time, or either one first.
