Sorry about that.  I set it once about six hours ago, and it hadn't
shown up four hours later, so I sent it again.  I assumed that it had
been dropped because I had neglected to properly sign up for the list
before sending.  I don't know where the third copy came from;
double-checking my sent mailbox shows it only being sent twice.

emerge -C portage is allowed, but it only removes the files listed as
belonging to the portage package (including the emerge executable); the
various data directories (that occupy almost 1 GB) are untouched.  My
main concern is in getting everything that 'emerge -C portage' leaves
behind.
