run a *compiled* program. This is false. C++ programs are usually linked against libstdc++ that is in the gcc directory. So removing gcc will break these programs. Go head, try it. emerge -C gcc, and see how well your system works. (DANGER: for anybody else reading this, do *NOT* do this. You will likely break python, and thus portage, and then you are really screwed).
