I'm quite sure that you (and others) didn't intensionally provide bad advice... ;) Actually I have not been able to locate any kind of official Gentoo documentation that tells users what to do when they run into a digest verification error. I have opened a bug [1] about that in light of the last couple of days where I have seen at least 4 users on IRC and on this list who had trouble with this..
