it also depends on what you define as the normal use of your machine - if you say that your machine is a "desktop" machine, then you _want_ X to be a dependancy of firefox, etc. If however you are setting up a server, then you _don't_ want X to be a dependancy of such. The way to define this, is of course with you profile.
