I used to have this issue (drives would mount, but not show up on the desktop). I fixed it by upgrading. Have you considered gnome 2.14? Did you try the gconf key: gconftool-2 --type bool --set /system/storage/display_internal_hard_drives true How did your versions of software compare with those listed in comment #68 in http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=107784 ?
