Any Pentium D (or higher) CPU supports 64bit.

The other option is to have a pure 64bit system and have a 32bit chroot
inside it for those few apps that need to stay 32bit (running Flash
plugins with Firefox spring to mind).

My pure 64bit Gentoo box seems much faster to me...
