a good command to see what free mem you have is "free" or "free -m"
the second line indicate the reaminging real ram they stay
ex:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ free -m
            total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
Mem:          3546       2005       1540          0        436        939
-/+ buffers/cache:        629       2917 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Swap:         8191          0       8191
