Well, do you have any backups of the system to work with? Cause if not, your next easiest approach might be to invent a time machine... But seriously, perhaps an emerge -e world might help? That might not work right away, but if you can fix the errors it gives as they come, it might be able to put everything else (besides user files) back as they were.
