Absolutely not. It might be possible to obtain a root login without ever logging in. Reboot the system. If you are using LILO: Choose your kernel. Append " init=/bin/sh" and press enter. You should get a "#" prompt in a while. If you are using GRUB: Press "e", then select de kernels parameters, and press "e" again. Append " init=/bin/sh". Press enter. Press "b" to boot it. Same results. Now, that's pretty much like chrooting to /mnt/gentoo when installing. Run env-update && source /etc/profile.
