Hi folks, I have just been bitten by this and bring it up here so others don't need to fall into the same pit.
If you want (or are forced) to have /boot and your MBR on different harddrives (*not* partitions) invoke grub and do the manual install as described in the handbook rather than use grub-install which simply assumes they are on the same drive.
