More likely to be the machine because the build has been working fine since...forgotten how long. (I do usually still get broken ebuilds but not many, and if you're anything to go by a certain amount are expected). I did recently have filesystem corruption on the /var partition but I don't see how that could be the cause...since I have emerge --sync'ed about three times isn't it unlikely that a disk error would cause the same error in the same package in three different --syncs?
