Well, if he uses nvidia drivers I think it will need to be the same. 
I'm not sure about mixing a 2.4 and say a 2.6 either.  It sort of
depends on what he is running.

I just remember doing that with Mandrake once a long time ago.  I used a
separate kernel for each distro.  It worked.
