Yes... this is typical of the later versions of baselayout. You have to enter 
your dns info into the file ate /etc/conf.d/net... Like this...

#/etc/conf.d/net
modules=("ifconfig")
config_eth0=("192.168.0.12 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255")
routes_eth0=("default via 192.168.0.1")
dns_domain_eth0=("my.domain")
dns_search_eth0=("search hsd99.nj.comcast.net.")
dns_servers_eth0=("68.87.75.194 68.87.64.146")
