OK, you seem to have run into the "Lets rip IDE out of the kernel and replace it with ATA" thing that happened in 2.6.18... In menuconfig , under Drivers, there's a menu a little bit below the IDE?MFM stuff. It's called SATA/PATA or similar. You will find appropriate settings for your hardware there. See how the above says absolutely nothing about ext3?
