Ok,,,, Whew.. now recovered portage and re-emerged portage-2.1.4_rc1
using the hand installed portage most recent full tarball
portage--2.1.3.16

All but the problem I reported earlier... before foolishly unmerging
portage is still there.  I don't recognize what these errors mean but
they showed up BEFORE the portage trouble and occur now too:

What is this about?  The log cited contains only the lines shown and
no other logs are present there
