With the kernel's own 2.6.25, my "dmesg|grep -i drm" says:
Apr 23 17:43:08 bert kernel: [drm] Initialized drm 1.1.0 20060810
Apr 23 17:43:08 bert kernel: [drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20060119 on minor 0

Yep, I'm using it (and the kernel module) and I get the same output of
"dmesg | grep drm"

If I remember correctly, only =x11-base/x11-drm-20071019 worked for me
(at least there was a reason for me to put it
in /etc/portage/package.keywords)

Looking at the sources of that exact version (20071019), i think the output should be "Initialized i915 1.11.0 20071019".

At least the date should match.

So now, after downgrading to 2.6.24.5 and installing x11-drm, i get the following output:

[drm] Initialized drm 1.1.0 20060810
[drm] Initialized i915 1.11.0 20070209 on minor 0

So indeed, the version is higher than the kernel's driver. But unfortunatly, i couldn't find any things that are actually fixed now.
