emm. It should be handle to at least 8gb. And since I use tar to write to my 280gb tapelib ... and this guy used a 21gb tarball for his tests:

Well, Kdar does the making part. I'm not doing anything fancy when unpacking it but when I do it with it set to 4.7Gb, I get a error about half way though unpacking. I can't recall the error at the moment but I should be able to reproduce it if needed.

I was thinking tar could handle huge files which is what confuses me.
