Hmm, I'd say yes. I mean, in what way should using hdparm really mess up your partitions or Filesystems in such a way, that they'd be beyond recovery?! I'm not implying that you could be facing a recovery-situation, but you'll only find out by trying. If the shit hits the fan, Testdisk (its included on the gparted live cd) is a really fine program, and has saved me multiple times now, after I did unspeakable things to my partition tables, which alas is far worse than using hdparm ;-P Holding my thumbs!
