Hello, i'm Alex. I decided to take the plunge and install Gentoo PPC on my old G4, replacing a thoroughly bloated ubuntu. I chose a manual install, and kernel build, and everything seemed to go ok, until it came to sound.
As those who are much smarter than i am in linux PPC matters will know, the challenge comes when trying to build sound, in this case the powermac driver. As there is no identifiable pci bus, the kernel build seems to ignore any alternative, and just keep looking for pci devices. I've added aliases, tried built in and module, and tweaked until i'm blue in the face, but no luck. I'm open to any help, advice, suggestions, or even a dose of good humour at this point. The intention is to build Gentoo with fluxbox, and use the laptop as an admin computer, so i can keep my AMD64 studio box (I'm a composer) in it's current pristine Gentoo 64bit state. (and no problems with this one. I'm overjoyed with the result. The best computer OS for writing and recording music i've ever owned or used.) Any help would be much appreciated, as i've tasted the Gentoo cognac, and don't really want to devolve into domestic distro land any more.
