Seems like the versions are incompatible with each other. Do you have anything X related masked/unmasked or key worded? You can also try unmerging them both and then emerging xorg-server and let portage handle the dependencies. If this is a first install you should emerge x11-base/xorg-x11. I made the mistake of just emerging the X server once, and that doesn't work. Maybe run revdep-rebuild two times to be sure everything is in order.
