Initially I thought that my installation must be fairly standard so I updated the readmes etc., but later I ran into so many problems that I thought I'd better not assume that *everyone* has these problems, it's probably just some freak situation, so I stopped claiming that Nominatim would "usually" do what it did on my machine. From the non-answers here on geocoding I also get the impression that practially nobody except MapQuest are running a world-wide Nominatim so if you are, I am more than interested in the sizes and performance info of your system.
