*****

Assistant or Associate Professor, Earth & Environment Program in the College of
Natural and Behavioral Sciences

California State University Dominguez Hills, invites applications for the
full-time, nine-month academic position of Urban Environmental Planner. The
position is tenured or tenure-track, depending on qualifications of the
candidate.

The University: California State University, Dominguez Hills was established in
1960 and is one of the 23 campuses that comprise the California State
University system. CSU Dominguez Hills is a comprehensive public university
located in the South Bay region of the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area.
With approximately 300 full-time faculty, the University serves the academic
needs of a culturally diverse student body of approximately 15,000 students in
an urban setting.

The College: The College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences is a
multidisciplinary College with over 120 full- and part-time faculty. In
addition to undergraduate programs in Anthropology, Biology, Behavioral
Science, Chemistry/Biochemistry, Computer Science/Computer Technology, Earth &
Environment, Mathematics, Sociology, Physics, Political Science and Psychology,
the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences includes graduate programs in
Biology, Environmental Science, Mathematics, Sociology and Psychology. Faculty
in the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences coordinate the upper division
general education requirements in the areas of Science-Math-Technology and
Social-Behavioral Sciences.

The Position: The faculty member will be responsible for developing and
teaching courses in environmental planning and/or policy, as part of the
multidisciplinary faculty offering in the Earth & Environment program, housed
within the Department of Earth Science. The degree program is an undergraduate
(B.A. and B.S.) emphasis on the natural sciences, as they relate to the study
and protection of the natural environment. The Earth & Environment program
combines geoscience and geographic curricula, using scientific and geographic
perspectives to examine environmental issues, and it trains students for
environment-based careers. The hired faculty member will develop new courses in
environmental planning and policy. Other faculty duties include student
advisement and routine, general service to the campus academic community.
Normal course load is four courses per semester, which may be reduced by
support from external funding. The faculty member may be called upon to teach
a distance-learning course.

Minimum Qualifications: Owing to the diverse scientific expertise existing
within the Department (and the College) the applicant is expected to hold a
Ph.D. in a STEM discipline, with expertise related to environmental planning
and/or policy, preferably within the regulated urban environment. The applicant
is expected to develop his/her research program to involve undergraduate and
graduate students and to secure external funding to support this scholarly
activity. The successful candidate must be able to teach undergraduate courses
in environmental planning and/or policy to a culturally diverse student body,
and craft new courses (upper and/or lower division) for the curricular emphasis
in his/her area of research. Importantly, the candidate must be willing to
collaborate with existing faculty to strengthen the curricular objectives of
the Earth & Environment program, including Environmental Planning, within the
Department of Earth Science.

Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience teaching and advising students in a
collegiate setting is valuable. In addition to the individual’s STEM research
related to the environment, a strong knowledge of the environmental regulatory
arena is highly desirable. Relevant areas of specialty include air and water
quality, environmental policy, environmental engineering, or the urban-wildland
interface, among others. Due to the broad, multidisciplinary nature of
environmental research, we encourage applications from a broad spectrum of
candidates, including those with working experience in government,
environmental consulting, planning and/or industry. The ability to collaborate
with other environmentally related programs in the College (e.g., anthropology,
biology, chemistry, and/or the graduate program in environmental science—all
partners in the campus Center for Urban Environmental Research) is also
important, including the capacity to develop new academic minors/initiatives.

Rank and salary: The Urban Environmental Planner position is open to candidates
at the entry and intermediate levels of experience (viz., the ranks of
Assistant and Associate Professor). Salary and rank are dependent upon
qualifications and professional experience. A comprehensive benefits program is
provided through the CSU.

Anticipated Start Date: August 2012.

Application Procedure: Those interested should access the University’s online
employment Website and click on the “View Job Opportunities” link. The Website
may be accessed from the following URL: http://www.csudh.edu/employment/.
