Lecturer/Associate Professor in Climate or Atmospheric Modelling

Reference Number ENVEE0125

Grade 8/9

Job Summary

We have introduced the title of Associate Professor for our grade 9
academic staff, which is equivalent to Senior Lecturer.

We are seeking an atmospheric modeller with a track record of excellent
research in global or regional model development and innovative
applications to climate or weather phenomena. We are interested in
candidates, for example, who implement and evaluate improved process
representations and assess impact on the global or regional scales or
modellers who diagnose local or regional weather and/or climate
phenomena from global simulations.

This will be an outstanding opportunity to lead research that links with
the established strengths of Institute for Climate and Atmospheric
Science (ICAS) in process studies in order to address important issues
such as climate change at regional scales. ICAS is an internationally
excellent centre, conducting research into climate and weather phenomena
in the areas of Atmospheric Dynamics and Clouds; Atmospheric Chemistry
and Aerosols; and Climate Change and Impacts. We study globally
important climate and weather processes by linking our field
measurements, laboratory analyses and models from the scale of local
weather phenomena to the global scale.

You will have the opportunity to benefit from our strong ties and formal
Academic Partnership with the Met Office and our long-standing
integration with and leadership of the UK National Centre for
Atmospheric Science, and our growing links with the insurance industry,
e.g. AXA and the Willis Research Network, facilitated through a new
University hub on Climate and Geohazard Services. We also have strong
collaborations with wider research on climate impacts within the Faculty
of Environment and beyond, such as the Centre for Climate Change
Economics and Policy, Africa College and the Ecology and Global Change
group. ICAS is a leading developer of advanced models across all scales,
including cloud-scale, mesoscale and global scale to study atmospheric
chemistry and aerosols, cloud processes and land-atmosphere
interactions. Consequently, ICAS make extensive use of HPC and you will
benefit from access to national and University of Leeds HPC facilities
and modelling support research scientists.

You should have strong academic foundations and a doctoral degree in a
physical science. You will be expected to have a strong publication
record, show evidence of research income generation, if appropriate,
together with teaching experience or potential, and show strong vision
for the future. You will be an excellent communicator and will
contribute high quality teaching on our meteorology and environmental
programmes.
