University of North Carolina at Charlotte
School of Architecture (SoA)

The School of Architecture [SoA] at the University of North Carolina Charlotte
invites applications for two full-time tenure-track faculty positions at the
rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Evidence of published research and/or
scholarship, substantial practice and/or teaching experience are preferred.
The School of Architecture currently offers four degree programs: Bachelor of
Arts in Architecture, Bachelor of Architecture, Master of Architecture and
Master of Urban Design. The SoA is committed to a culturally and
intellectually diverse environment with a broad range of opportunities for
creative work. Faculty and students are supported by exceptional facilities and
a dynamic metropolitan landscape. The School is also committed to an academic
climate in which the dignity of every individual is respected. We celebrate
diversity that includes, but is not limited to, ability/disability, age,
culture, ethnicity, gender, language, race, religion, sexual orientation, and
socio-economic status. We strongly encourage applications from women and
members of under-represented groups. Faculty appointments commence mid-August
2013.

> Urban Visualization
New digital tools and techniques are enabling entirely new ways to imagine,
observe, analyze and understand our cities. The SoA seeks to advance its
capacity to analyze, model and visualize urban futures through the tenure-track
appointment of an urban designer with expertise in urban visualization,
computational modeling, and scenario planning. Candidates will be expected to
offer urban design studios and seminars in fields such as GIS, urban
visualization and scenario planning to students enrolled in the Master of Urban
Design (MUD) program and professional degree programs in Architecture. This
includes teaching courses abroad as part of MUD’s integral international summer
program and SoA’s expanding initiatives in international education. This
position is intended to extend the breadth and depth of research in our urban
design program through leveraging digital tools and techniques in new and
transformative ways. It is also expected to expand our curriculum through new
elective course offerings and interdisciplinary collaboration across academic
and research units in the College and University. The successful candidate must
demonstrate his or her ability to be an effective teacher, and conduct research
and scholarship in urban design, geospatial data analysis, urban visualization,
and/or scenario planning. A PhD in Planning, GIS, Computational Design or a
related discipline is preferred. A graduate degree in Urban Design,
Architecture and/or Landscape Architecture is required. Professional
experience in one or more of these areas is advantageous.

> Design Practice
Global economies, innovative design, new construction methods and building
performance goals, and integrated project delivery are changing the nature of
contemporary architectural practice. The SoA seeks to emphasize the changing
nature of architectural practice through the tenure-track appointment of a
faculty member with a creative body of innovative design work engaged in
research of contemporary practice(s). The position entails teaching advanced
design studios associated with emerging technologies, new elective courses, and
SoA’s required course in professional practice. The School seeks candidates
capable of engaging critical design discourse and methods, computational
practices, integrated design, and organizational management of architectural
projects. The successful candidate must demonstrate his or her ability to be an
effective teacher with a commitment to teaching students the skills, tools,
methods, values and ethics of the profession of architecture as it is changing.
It is also expected the candidate will conduct research and scholarship on
contemporary architectural practice, new forms of local and global practices
and/or the advancement of cross-disciplinary research within the realm of
practice, as well as help advance the School’s mission of engaging strategic
industry leaders and associations. A minimum of five years of professional
practice experience is expected. A Master’s degree in architecture (M.Arch.)
and professional licensure is required.

Qualified applicants must complete the online faculty application at
https://jobs.uncc.edu. Application requirements include a cover letter
indicating position sought, a curriculum vita, a letter of interest, including
statements of pedagogical and research objectives, an abridged portfolio, and
contact information for three references. Submission materials may be sent
