The Marilyn J. Gittell Visiting Professorship, established in honor of the
late Political Science Professor at the CUNY Graduate Center, is for a
social science Ph.D. working on areas that concerned Marilyn Gittell,
especially research focused on cities, urban politics, public policy,
democratic and civic engagement, social movements, citizenship and
governance, and community practices, both domestically and abroad.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in hand by August 2015, in Anthropology,
History, Political Science, Sociology, Urban Studies, or a related field.

The goal of the Gittell postdoctoral fellowship program is to prepare
researchers committed to understanding and addressing critical issues in
community-engaged research, especially in urban settings. The Visiting
Professor will be expected to help administer seminars and activities
sponsored by the Marilyn J. Gittell Endowed Chair in Urban Studies.

The Environmental Psychology program draws upon interdisciplinarity as the
means to include the many necessary perspectives for understanding the
interactions of people and place, while embracing the policy and design
disciplines that shape our environments - including our built environment,
social settings, informational environments, and natural ones.

Duties include but are not limited to:
- Educational training: create an individualized curriculum plan to address
substantive, conceptual, and methodological areas relevant to the fellow's
needs and objectives for post-doctoral education, to support fellows in
acquiring skills and knowledge required to conduct independent research and
analysis of issues and problems related to urban studies and
community-based research.
- Research Training: develop and implement independent research with the
guidance and mentorship of the Gittell Chair in Urban Studies. Research
training will also include support for travel to meetings related to the
trainee's research interests.
- Program Administration: Co-planning and managing seminars, public events,
and other activities sponsored by the Gittell Chair, including an Urban
Research Conference. Develop curricula to share the Gittell Urban Studies
group's methodologies and projects. Work with the Gittell Chair to identify
strategic goals and provide mentorship to graduate fellows as needed,
including grant development and communications.
QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent. Also required are the
ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and
ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

A preferred candidate should have a Ph.D. in one of the disciplines in the
humanistic social sciences. Candidates who received their Ph.D. in 2011 at
the earliest, or who have completed the requirements for the Ph.D. by the
application deadline are preferred.
