Subject: UCLA Urban Planning position in Metropolitan & Urban Studies in
the Global South
To: "Roy, Ananya" <[email protected]>

Dear friends,

Please encourage your graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to apply
(see below). This will most likely be a hire at the Assistant Professor
level although we will consider applications by senior scholars. Paavo
Monkkonen is chairing the search and I am on the committee along with
Michael Storper (we just might have to write a joint paper on the future of
urban studies after the search has concluded).

Best wishes,

Ananya

UCLA’s Department of Urban Planning invites applicants for a tenure-track
faculty position in Metropolitan and Urban Studies in the Global South,
which we consider to include Asia, Africa, and Latin America. We encourage
applicants with a broad range of research topics, which might include urban
and peri-urban politics and governance, corruption and state capacity, city
building and land development, the development industry, global capital
flows and urban transformations, violence and policing, displacement and
refugee populations, metropolitan infrastructure development and
management, urban social movements, and comparative work, especially
South-South comparison. We not only welcome scholars from urban studies and
planning, but also those trained in other theoretical and methodological
approaches, and from multidisciplinary backgrounds. We expect our new
colleague to take the lead in advancing collaborative and interdisciplinary
research on cities and metropolitan regions in the Global South with
colleagues at UCLA and beyond, in addition to teaching courses in our
professional Masters in Urban and Regional Planning program and our new
undergraduate major in Public Affairs.

To apply, please submit a brief cover letter, a research statement of less
than 500 words highlighting scholarly contributions of recent research and
plans for the near future, at least one publication or writing sample, a
teaching statement of less than 300 words outlining the content of a class
you would like to teach, and three letters of recommendation.

The Department of Urban Planning, in the Luskin School of Public Affairs,
currently hosts 16 tenured/tenure-track planning faculty, seven affiliated
tenured/tenure-track faculty, four visiting practice faculty, five active
professors emeriti, 38 Ph.D. students, 148 master’s students, and 60
undergraduate minors across its large, diverse, and highly selective Ph.D.,
master’s, and undergraduate programs. We have a tradition of intellectual
leadership in urban and regional studies and design, and our faculty,
students, and alumni are committed to social justice and progressive
planning ideals. Los Angeles is a global city renowned for its dynamism,
robust economy, rich cultural diversity, spectacular climate, as well as
high levels of inequality, poverty and homelessness, residential
segregation, and traffic. The UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs is an
interdisciplinary school with highly ranked departments of Social Welfare
and Public Policy. All faculty in the Luskin School of Public Affairs
(including the departments of Social Welfare, Urban Planning, and Public
Policy) have opportunities to participate in current school initiatives in
global affairs, digital technologies, the environment, democracy and
inequality, global development, Latin American cities, and social justice,
equity, and opportunity.

UCLA offers competitive salary and attractive benefits packages, including
a housing assistance program for new faculty members. The University of
California seeks to recruit and retain a diverse workforce as a reflection
of our commitment to serve the people of California, to maintain the
excellence of the University, and to offer our students richly varied
disciplines, perspectives, and ways of knowing and learning. The Department
of Urban Planning in particular is committed to diversity and excellence in
our faculty, students, and scholarship, and we especially encourage
candidates who share and can contribute to this commitment. A separate
statement that addresses past and/or potential contributions to equity,
diversity, and inclusion must also be included in the application
materials. The University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative
Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for
employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual
orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age or protected
veteran status. For the complete University of California nondiscrimination
and affirmative action policy, see: UC Nondiscrimination & Affirmative
Action Policy.

While we expect to appoint at the rank of Assistant Professor, we will
consider applicants and appointments at all levels. We expect candidates to
hold a Ph.D. in urban planning or a related discipline at time of
appointment. The expected start date is July 1, 2019. All materials must be
submitted via UCLA Academic Recruit by Thursday, November 1, 2018, to be
guaranteed full consideration.
