This is the first I'm hearing of this.  So my reason would be not lack of 
interest but because it wasn't offered as an option.
How many people in OSGeo community even know about such an offer?

I'm not sure how many others are in the same boat.

That said I only work for free on projects I contribute to and/or am 
emotionally attached to.  If it helps OSGeo that's good. 
If I'm getting paid for it to ensure it helps OSGeo, then I'd happily do it.
