I asked Sebastian the same thing.  He said it's needed in configure script to 
escape the [] as I recall.

I believe there is a POSIX spec for sed. So the right thing in sed use is to 
depend on only what POSIX requires. Which could be avoiding sed :-)

I can see if I can fix the regexp ; what it's doing isn't that complicated.

Can you explain the extra []?
