http://geoserver.org/display/GEOSDOC/2+Maven+Quickstart It would help if you included the failures you are getting so we can better comment on what might be wrong. Another thing to keep in mind is that trunk can be unstable at times, and it might just be that the build is broken. You can check this by visiting http://hudson.opengeo.org/hudson/, and noting the status of "geoserver-trunk".
