MassGIS unwisely chose to use a period in their feature type names, and since
the layer.properties file in the security subsystem uses a period as a
delimiter (namespace.layer.permission=ROLE_1[,ROLE_2][, ...]]), our feature
type names are not recognized. It would be helpful if we could escape the
period or otherwise allow it in the layer portion.
