Aah, you're using gcj, which is not really a valid Java runtime. GeoServer developers mostly use Sun Java, some use IBM Java, but afaik no one is using OpenJDK or GCJ. Please install Sun JDK and make sure it's the default java runtime for your system (most distribution have a "alternatives" command allowing to setup the preferred java runtime).
