Hi Niels,
I have vague memories of that datastore having issues
with Tomcat in a war deploy due to some tricks Tomcat
plays with JAI to allow apps to undeploy without leaking permgen...
(geoserver does not undeploy cleanly regardless btw)
And that prevented startup maybe?
I have no idea if it's still happening, could have been specific to some
Tomcat version.
Sorry I don't remember anything more specific than that.. but yeah, from
the geoserver-history repo it seem it was disabled
on purpose by Justin in 2011:
