Hi,
as promised I've put together a pull request implementing rtree support for
geopackages:
https://github.com/geotools/geotools/pull/1705
The speed up if of course quite large. However, the distance between
geopackages and
shapefiles have not been filled yet, I've made two quick benchmarks
repeating the same map request on my computer with multiple threads, on the
tiger roads data set used for the FOSS4G 2008 benchmark (all Texas roads, 3
millions of them):
- Trying to render the entire dataset takes 1 second for shapefile and
24 seconds for geopackage, both working off a hot file system cache
- Trying to render a small portion of it (small town in view) is
blinking fast for both, running a benchmark shows something like 130
requests per second on geopackage, and 150 for shapefile
One of the major advantages of shapefile is that it has the "simplify on
bbox" functionality still missing from geopackage.
However, I cannot implement it as part of SQL, will have to redesign a bit
the JDBC data store to allow creation of "attribute reader" objects created
once and used used over and over
to get there with good performance (and in the process, remove one thread
local hack from the postgis store).
Not sure if/when this will be done, but for sure not in time for 2.12.0
That said, access to shapefile is raw and optimized, access to geopackage
is mediated by a JDBC driver and needs to cross the JNI
barrier, so I don't expect the geopackage store to ever match the shapefile
performance... but it should be possible to make it
get closer on the "render my whole giant dataset" use case.
Cheers
Andrea
