As a further update, I've run this process on all the geoserver-*
workspaces on the Jenkins build server, and freed up approx. 7 GB of space
across the different 16 checkouts:

Before:
/dev/sda2       251G  177G   62G  74% /

After
/dev/sda2       251G  170G   69G  72% /
